Why Writing Works

Disciplinary Approaches to Composing Texts

Documentation in Math

by Dr. Heather Moreland

Sources should be cite in mathematical journal articles, presentations, and posters.  Most journals have a preferred format for authors to use. From personal experience, being able to go back and refer to a reference paper is invaluable in mathematical research. One can gain additional insights into the problem and in some cases (personal experience) discover an error in the paper that can then be corrected in one's own work.

In their senior seminar projects at SMSU, students are encouraged to use the cited sources of a paper to obtain more resources and information. The final paper and poster are required to have appropriately documented sources cited and listed in a bibliography.
