Why Writing Works

Disciplinary Approaches to Composing Texts

Documentation in Professional Writing

by Dr. Teresa Henning

Generally speaking, some system of in-text citation and citation at the end is used in all PowerPoints and written material. However, there is some variation as to what citation format is acceptable. The following formats can be used: MLA, APA and Chicago Style. Some journals have their own formats that must be followed by those who publish in the journal.

In general, the type of citation style used is reflective of the purpose of the writing:
  • APA format is used for writing situations where currency is most important.
  • MLA format is used for writing situations where the credibility of the writer is most important.
  • Chicago style is used for writing situations where both currency and writer credibility are important.
  • All these value gender neutrality with APA often considered the most neutral as only initials of authors’ first names are used.
