Why Writing Works

Disciplinary Approaches to Composing Texts

Writing in Agricultural Education

by Dr. Kristin Kovar

Within Agricultural Education, it is important that teachers are able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing when communicating with parents, other teachers, administrators or community members/supporters. Agriculture is a much more hands-on, in the field type work.  Therefore, writing is more technical and focused on reports, etc.

Technology in the classroom has become more and more of a necessity in the K-12 classroom. Therefore, students wanting to be future teachers need experience in presenting information, whether that be oral or written, in virtual settings.

Types of writing in Agricultural Education

In Ag Ed, teachers write lesson plans, create teaching presentations, possibly present to other teachers in professional development.  Teachers can write articles that can be published in the Agricultural Education Magazine.  Teachers can write grants for projects they want to complete at their schools.  Teachers communicate to parents through newsletters, websites, and social media.  It is important for Ag teachers to promote their programs and will write newspaper articles to showcase their programs to their communities.

Typically, not too many new teachers will write grants or magazine articles. This can be more common among experienced teachers.  New teachers focus on lesson plans, newsletters, social media and newspaper article program promotion.

Writing in the classroom

In college, students will write lesson plans, lesson presentations, newspaper articles, newsletters as these are all important to the teacher in the classroom. When writing lessons, it is important for students to be very thorough.  This is a different type of writing when it comes to newspaper articles or newsletters.  Students must have creativity in their writing and presentations to increase engagement among students, as well as parents and community members.
